WHERE THE MEMORY ROARS
/ DÄR MINNET BRUSAR /

2025

hand-knotted rya, hand-dyed wool

The memory moves, shifts, dissolves and takes on a new form. As when light changes the tone of colour, or when the wind makes the surface tremble. Thread by thread, a map of nuances and movement grows, where time unfolds in diffuse layers of colours and fibres.

Memory is never static.
The colour transitions symbolize the mutability of memory. Each rya knot is influenced by its neighbour, carrying traces of the memory’s origin. The two sides of the weave stand in contrast – light and darkness, past and present.

Memory is constantly shaped by what we choose to hold on to.
We carry different experiences from the same occurrence.
How are we shaped by the differing perspectives others hold of a shared memory?

Where the Memory Roars lies in the borderland between the tangible and the elusive

– a whisper of something that once was, or perhaps never really existed.

about

Pernille Knudsen (b. 1991, Sweden) engages in a material-driven practice rooted in a dynamic process. Her approach is intuitive and exploratory, allowing creativity to unfold organically. Textiles serve as both medium and method — a site where diverse techniques enter into dialogue with volume, surface modulation, and chromatic interplay.

Positioned between chance and control, Knudsen’s works emerge through acts of negotiation, where colour functions not merely as embellishment but as a structuring force — balancing tension through contrast and unexpected harmony. Each project unfolds as an open-ended conversation between materiality, nuance and perception, guided by process, spontaneity, and a deep attentiveness to the tactile and the temporal.
